Decorative Liquid Metal Coatings: Performance, Durability, and Specification Considerations
Bespoke Finish is a specialized design and finishing atelier, led by Robert Chickey, that creates custom, high-end wood and metal finishes for architects, designers, and luxury projects. With over 30 years of experience, they specialize in color matching, VeroMetal® applications, and the proprietary "Bespoke Finish Method™" to achieve precise aesthetic goals.
Metal surfaces are widely used in architecture for their durability, aesthetic richness, and evolving character. However, traditional fabricated sheet and plate systems introduce challenges related to weight, seams, structural support, and transportation. This course examines decorative liquid metal finishes systems as an alternative approach to achieving real metal finishes on architectural substrates. Participants will explore system composition, substrate compatibility, adhesion performance, finishing techniques, exterior exposure considerations, and long-term maintenance strategies. The course will compare liquid-applied systems with conventional fabricated metal assemblies in terms of structural demand, durability, cost implications, and sustainability impacts. Specification coordination within CSI Division 09 and relevant testing standards will also be reviewed to support informed decision-making in both interior and exterior applications.
- Describe the composition and installation process of decorative liquid metal finish systems, including substrate preparation and adhesion requirements for interior and exterior applications.
- Compare liquid metal finishes to traditional fabricated sheet metal assemblies in terms of structural weight, seam control, durability, and long-term performance.
- Evaluate environmental exposure factors such as moisture, oxidation, fire performance, and sealing strategies that influence safety and service life.
- Identify specification strategies and sustainability considerations, including CSI coordination, VOC compliance, material efficiency, and documentation pathways relevant to green building frameworks.
